*No, Volkswagen as a company is not closing or shutting down operations in Germany.* The company remains active with multiple production sites across the country and continues as one of Germany's largest employers.
However, on December 16, 2025, Volkswagen ended vehicle production at its Dresden plant (known as the "Transparent Factory") for the first time in its 88-year history. This small facility, opened in 2001 and primarily producing electric models like the ID.3 recently, has ceased manufacturing due to economic pressures, including weak demand, high costs in Germany, competition from China, and impacts from U.S. tariffs.
The site is being repurposed into a research hub for AI, robotics, and chip design in partnership with the state of Saxony and Dresden University of Technology. Affected workers (around 230) have been offered transfers, severance, or retirement packages.
This closure is part of a broader 2024 union agreement to cut costs, including reducing production capacity by over 730,000 vehicles annually by 2028 and eliminating 35,000 jobs in Germany by 2030 through natural attrition and voluntary measures—no full factory closures beyond Dresden's production halt were mandated in that deal.
Volkswagen still operates major plants in locations like Wolfsburg, Zwickau, and Emden, among others. The Dresden move reflects ongoing restructuring challenges in the German auto industry but not a company-wide shutdown.
