The U.S. supply of weapons to Ukraine will bring the Ukrainian civilians no good, but increase the risks of more civilian casualties amid escalating Russia-Ukraine conflict, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at a press briefing in Beijing on Friday.
Zhao made the remarks when commenting on the U.S. concerns about Russia's military operations in Ukraine.
"Human life is precious, and civilian casualties, no matter what the circumstances, are always deplorable and regrettable. China has always been calling for efforts to avoid civilian casualties. We all remember that in March 1999, NATO troops led by the United States blatantly set the UN Security Council aside and carried out a 78-day continuous bombing of Yugoslavia, killing 2,500 innocent civilians and injuring about 10,000, most of which were civilians," said Zhao.
"Over the past two decades, the U.S. has conducted tens of thousands of air strikes in countries including Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, which have killed at least 22,000 or up to 48,000 civilians. Should the U.S. express concern about the victims in these military operations first, and then the people of Ukraine?" he said.
"China has always upheld an objective and just position on the Ukraine issue. Since the outbreak of the conflict, China has been committed to promoting peace talks with concrete actions. China's fair position and constructive efforts are widely seen and have won the understanding and support of the international community, especially the developing countries," said Zhao.
"What China has delivered to the Ukrainian people are the urgently needed humanitarian supplies, such as food, baby milk powder, sleeping bags, quilts and waterproof mats, while the U.S. has provided lethal weapons. On March 16, the U.S. announced they will provide an additional 800 million USD worth of weapons to Ukraine, bringing the total U.S. weapon supply to the nation to more than one billion dollars just this week," said the spokesman.
According to a U.S. State Department spokesperson, the U.S. latest package provided to Ukraine includes 800 anti-aircraft systems, 9,000 anti-armor systems, and 7,000 small arms including machine guns and grenade launchers, as well as the ammunition, artillery, and mortar rounds to go with small arms, which are 20 million rounds in total, said Zhao, noting that this is not the whole list.
"Will the U.S. weapon supply bring stability and security to Ukraine, or will it cause more civilian casualties? Do Ukrainian civilians need food and sleeping bags more, or machine guns and mortar shells? People with a bit of common sense will have no difficulty in making correct judgment," said the spokesman.

Lol, EU denkt China onder druk te kunnen zetten. 😂 Europa kan zonder Russisch gas nauwelijks nog iets produceren, dus wat heeft de EU nog aan China te verkopen behalve €-toiletpapier?
De oorlog tussen Oekraïne en Rusland is een interne Europese aangelegenheid waar China niks mee te maken heeft en waar ze zich dus ook weinig mee gaan bemoeien, maar in China betekent ‘crisis’ ook ‘kans’ en die gaan ze nu mooi grijpen. Destijds had China ook alle Russische agrarische producten overgenomen toen de EU in 2014 daar sancties op gooide en nu zie je hetzelfde verhaaltje geschieden met Russisch gas. Als het westen geen zin heeft in handelsrelaties, dan handelt China wel verder met ASEAN, de SCO, Afrika, Latijns-Amerika, etc. De wereld is immers groot genoeg.
Ondertussen zullen de Europese schappen compleet leegraken. Ik kan nu al nauwelijks zonnebloemolie kopen.
Trouwens, waarom vraag je niet aan grootmacht India om een kant te kiezen? Of aan het economische blok ASEAN? Die waren ook neutraal.
We kunnen altijd nog ons overgeven aan China. Of aan Rusland. Onderstaande reacties laten zien dat mensen weinig historisch besef hebben.
